Biography

Born in the Weslyan Mission Station at Mangungu in the Hokianga, Northland New Zealand called "Newark"

Daily Southern Cross 1.3.1864 p:10 MARRIAGES On January 27th at Oruawharo and Arai Church by the Rev.W.Gittos, Edward third son of the Rev. John Hobbs to Annie, third daughter of Mr. John Gittos of Insby, Te Arai, Mangawhai.

Cyclopedia of New Zealand - Edward Gyles Hobbs The second son of the late Rev. John Hobbs, one of the first Wesleyan ministers to settle in New Zealand. He was born in 1839 near Hokianga Heads, and was educated in Auckland. For some time Mr. Hobbs was in the soft goods trade in Whangarei, and then became a settler in the Pokeno district, where he remained for twenty-six years. In 1892 he removed to Hamilton, Waikato, and has settled on a fine section of fourteen acres on the east side of the river near Kirikiriroa railway station. Mr. Hobbs was for some time a member of the Pokeno Road Board, and acted as honorary secretary for some years.

New Zealand Herald 25.3.1908 P:8 Mr. Edward Gyles Hobbs died at bis residence in Jervois Road yesterday forenoon at the age of 69. The deceased, who was second son of the Rev. J. Hobbs Wesleyan missionary, and brother of Mr. R. Hobbs was born at Newark, the missionary station at Hokianga, in 1839. For many years he lived at Pokeno, (Waikato) and up till recently at Claudelands, in the Waikato. The deceased is survived by his wife and family of seven, two daughters and five sons. The remains will be interred at Hamilton to-day.
