Biography

Mary was born about 1868. Her parents were Annie & Edward G Hobbs. She was the granddaughter of Rev. J. Hobbs, a pioneer Wesleyan missionary to New Zealand.

She married Robert Lyons in 1898. The marriage registration online shows her family name to be Nobbs, but this appears to be an error (likely a transcription error as N and H look similar when handwritten).

There are numerous references to family (nephews and nieces) that have the name Hobbs (these are found in articles in New Zealand newspapers). In 1920 she had given evidence at the inquest of her nephew Albert Hobbs, who was living with them in Mangatawhiri, when he committed suicide. Her niece Irene Hobbs was also called as a witness.

She passed away about 1931. She and her husband never had any children. When her husband passed away in 1938, the estate was left primarily to a nephew but there were also bequests to Mary's nieces. (see source information under Robert Lyons).
