The Hobbs Ydna project at FTDNA of which I belong managing my father’s Ydna, clearly shows Thomas Hobbs and the Vincent Hobbs line being related but it’s so far back it’s irrelevant.

My father is listed here - Jerry Hobbs who has tested to Y-111.

Vincent line is group A - Thomas line is group C

So either Vincent line is not related to Abraham or the Thomas line is not. Based on my decades of research, I believe the later.

So I don’t misconstrue the admin’s words when comparing the two lines. They responded with the following.

“ While they may "look" close, they are not - if they were, I would have placed them in the one family grouping.

And no, there is not a particular marker - there are a number of markers where the difference is too great.

But let us compare the one BIG Y tester in group C with the main Big Y tester results in group A. Xxxxxxx (removed for privacy) belongs to the R-L21 Haplogroup and xxxxxxx (Removed for privacy) belongs to the R-U106 Haplogroup.

There are thousands of years between them. So, yes, they are related, but so far back that it is irrelevant. “

Y dna testers, please join

Based on Dna. I have made his father as uncertain

Hobbs-590 and Hobbs-658 appear to represent the same person because: These two Thomas Hobbs are the same. See the estate papers located here

For decades there are several of us that have been trying to prove /disprove the connection of Abraham to Thomas. I’ve searched, done Dna (mine and my fathers Y ), and contacted many that made that assumption.

No one can provide the proof and maybe we will never know.

Both Thomas and Abraham are in my database as I have researched, but decades later, their connection remains disconnected in my tree.

Theory 1 goes along with the connection here and I see it all over the place: Thomas is the son of Abraham (ll) b. 1666 in Bideford, Devon County, England and died ????

Abraham's father was also named Abraham (l) b. abt. 1625 in Kembie, England and died abt. 1710 in NC.

This was printed in the Hobbs book that was researched and published by Oliver Hobbs years ago. I’ve talked with his descendant whom has his geneology records, but no proof has been found to make this statement.

Theory 2: Thomas Hobbs was born in England and immigrated to Virginia abt 1690. This is what I have in my tree.

This is stated in his GGS bible that I have a copy of. This was Barnabus Coffin Hobbs bible (his great grandson through William - Elisha - Thomas). Barnabus, William, and Elisha were all Quakers. (Which I am lucky as they were keen to document things)

______________________________________ So lets talk about these theories. ______________________________________

I find both Abraham and Thomas in records, last named spelled differently.

Abraham is found in several early Albemarle county (no longer exists) in Perquimans precinct court minutes starting the earliest I have found in 1697. He seemed to stay in and out of court over something and there are many lawsuits.

https://docsouth.unc.edu/csr/index.php/search

and

https://www.google.com/books/edition/History_of_Perquimans_County/eU8d_Q2V90cC?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=abraham%20hobs%20perquimans%20county

(Search for Hobs in both links).

In 1702 Abraham cannot be found and the charges go against the estate. Presume dead or MIA? OK That is close to death date of abt 1710.

Slightly later records show Mary (wife) begging for mercy for her and her underaged child Abraham jr. (no mention of any other children)

Eventually I find Abraham jr sells the estate in 1715.

In all the records it was spelled Hobs. Why the two different spellings?

After 1715 I cannot find Abraham Jr in any neighboring counties. Pass away? Move?

Side Note: There is an Abraham Hobbs that pops up in Lumberton, NC in the council mintutes of April 4, 1720 where a petition is read from 1716 by him.

Now Lumberton to Hobbsville is 3.5 - 4 hours by car or 230 miles. Abandon the area since his father was always in trouble? Did he want a fresh start after selling the estate in 1715 ? If he did do that his son (Thomas) stayed here and purchased land in Chowan county in 1718. More on this thought in a bit.

These same records hold other records of what I know are our line, but they are all spelled Hobbs). Intersting but its not unusal to have versious spellings.

The timelines just don't add up for me.

- If Thomas is the son of Abraham Jr and we know that Abraham is a minor in perquimans court with his mother in 1702, how does he have a son (Thomas) by 1690 twelve years earlier?

- If Abraham sells the estate in 1715 and disappears out of all records forever, but Thomas purchases land in 1718.

They are closer in age to be brothers not father and son. If I stay on this train of thought and go ok Abraham Jr and Thomas are the son of Abraham Sr. BUT Mary only begs for mercy for her and Abraham jr. No one else. Wouldn't they have written Mary Hobs and her heirs ? Not Mary Hobs and Abraham Jr. Where would Thomas be?

Nope 1 + 1 doesn't equal 2 for me.

Moving along - and back to his GGS bible. To be sure that close in kinship they have most of this correct. They are also quakers and are known to be well documented.

We can find that a Thomas Hobbs was transported with others by Thmas Hickman of King Williams Co., on 27 Oct 1702 according to the book Volume lll of Virginia Cavaliers by Nugent in Patent Book #9, pg 67.

Could this be our Thomas that was said he came over around 1690 ? I think here is a slight case of not explaining well. Born in 1690 not came over in 1690 ?

No records have been found on a Thomas Hobbs in VA.

The first record in NC is found 12 Jul 1718 for a land transaction in Chowan County Deed Book #1.

I have seen both theories printed in the most popular Hobbs's books and on the internet as it started to grow. However, one of the most compelling things about theory 1 is the fact that the name Abraham does not reappear anywhere throughout the generations to follow. Now we can argue that he was not well liked, or maybe even disowned. But my Thomas and every generation thereafter reuses the same names over and over.

Sorry if I bounced back and forth a bit and hopefully not too confusing.

Sigh...... Anyone?
