Sir Thomas Hoby was born after the death of his father - hence his second name, Posthumous. Queen Elizabeth I stood as his godmother, with the Earl of Leicester acting as her proxy. He was very small of stature throughout his life, and probably had some physical deformities, and was frequently described by contemporaries in insulting term e.g. "the little knight that seth to draw up his Breeches with a Shooing-Horn".
Despite his handicaps, he was an active magistrate and member of the Council of the North, as well as being a Member of Parliament.
He married in his mother's house in Blackfriars, London, on 9 August 1596.[1]
Through his wife he gained possession of the estate of Hackness, Yorkshire.[2] and they were largely responsible for a restoration of the church at Hackness. Sir Thomas was buried next to his wife in that church.
He had no children.
