Biography

From the published book by Harvey Hostetler, Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler, the immigrant of 1736:

Hochstetler Lineage John, John, John, Jacob.

1934, John Hostetler, 4th generation in the family of Jacob Hochstetler, son of 1387, Mt. Hope, Ohio, at death, was b. June 23, 1782, in Pa., d. Mar. 2, 1856, and married (1) Magdalena Lehman, b. Oct. 18, 1787. Amish church.
Children: Catherine, Dec. 19, 1806 — d. at about 18; Dorley, 1935;- Susanna, Aug. 27, 1809— Mar. 4, 1810, inquest held Mar. 5, 1810; Lazarus, 1940; Moses, 1992; Zachariah, 2046; Jacob, 2075; Susan, 6481; Tobias, 2092; Polly, 2103; Lizzie, 2122.

Married (2) Fanny Yoder, who was b. Aug. 23, 1790, the dau. of David Yoder, Johnstown, Pa.
Children: Harriet, 2123; Fortunatus, 2145.[1]

Note: 1934, The will of John Hochstetler was made Jan. 11, 1856, and filed June 5, 1856.

The following is a copy of the inquisition taken on the body of a child belonging to John Houghstetler, Jr:
" Inquisition lndented and taken at the house of John Houghstetler, Jr., the fifth day of March, 1810, before Shaphat Durre, one of the Justices of the Peace, of the county of Somerset, by the solemn affirmations of John Beeghley, John Forney, Abraham Beghley, John Schultz, Henry Yoder, Sr., Chris tian Lichty, Simon Bluebough, Benjamin Houghstetler, Henry Houghstetler, Joseph Hershberger, Jacob Mast, Jr., John Houghstetler, Sr., twelve substantial freeholders of said county on the dead body of a child about seven months old belonging to John Houghstetler, Jr. " The said John Houghstetler, Jr., upon solemn affirmation doth say he went to his sugar camp which was about seventy or eighty yards from his house, about one hour after night, and his wife, Magdalena, and Barbara Lehman, single woman, a sister of his wife, came about a half hour after him to the sugar camp. They both of them upon their solemn affirmations doeth say that they did leave the child asleep in the cradle with a feather cover over It, bound across with a string of home made tape; and about two o'clock of said night of March 4, 1810, they all three came to the house and the child was taken out of the cradle, the string broken, and the cover turned over to one side, and in searching the house through, turning up the foot of a bed, there found the child sunk down in the under bed and the upper bed was pressed down tight upon it and was dead. "The said twelve good men, who upon their affirmation aforesaid respectively do say that the child was smothered dead between the upper and lower bed, but by whom it is unknown, know not whom to suspect, as there was no person in or about the house that night. In testimony whereof as well the said justice as the said freeholders have hereunto lnterchangeably set their hands and seals, dated the day and year first above written. Signed and sealed by Shaphat Durre, Esq., John Beeghley, John Forney, Abraham Buechle, John Shultz, Henry Yoder. Christian Lichtdin, Simon Blubbach, Ben Hochstedier, Henry Hochstetler, Joseph Hershberger, Jacob Mast, John Hochstetler, Sr." This inquest and its sequel has been discussed ln the historical lntroduction. The spelling of the names is given as they appear in the original document now in possession of Samuel J. Hostetler of fam. 2000. These jurors were nearly all closely related to each other and the child. Their names appear in fame, Abraham Buechele, 1218. Henry Yoder, 3251, Simon Blubbach, 267, 546, Ben Hochstedier, 1665. Henry Hochstetler, 4760, Joseph Hershberger, 1388, Jacob Mast, 3871, and John Hochstetler, Sr., 1387.

The will of Jacob Leaman names among his heirs John Houghstetler and wife, Magdalena, and Joseph Yoder of Stony Creek Township and his wife, Mary.[2]
