Biography

John was born about 1675, estimated from first known child George, who was baptised 11 January 1701/1702 at Doncaster, Yorkshire, "George the sonn of John Hodgson labourer".[1][2] He had children George, John, William, and Thomas. On the first three, his occupation was given as labourer but on the baptism of Thomas he is shown as bellman (town crier) "Thomas the sonn of John Hodshon, bellman".[3] His son George was later a bellman also.

John died in 1711 and was buried on 5 September 1711 at Doncaster, "John Hodshon belman".[4]

Research Notes

This John appears to have been made originally as the father of George Hodgson the Quaker emigrant, said to have been born 6 January 1701, but there is no evidence to connect them. George the emigrant is said to have sailed for America with his family in 1710, probably from Ireland, but George born in Doncaster 1701/1702 has a marriage there 25 October 1724[5] and an eldest son named John baptised 2 March 1726/1727 "John the son of George Hodgson bellman".[6]
