Biography

Matthias Josephus Witsch, born in Erpel (Pruissen), 35 years old, married Maria Anna Hofer, born in Rotterdam, 27 years old, on September 8, 1847 in Rotterdam. Her parents were Johannes Hofer and Maria Anna Ernst.[1]

Note

Note: Per the Önsbach Familienbuch, she went to America. Per Rose Goutbeck, she married Mathias Josef WITSCH in 1847. Her information was from the Önsbach emigration lists.
"Under her name I have a note saying " Rotterdam" (have not the source) wonder did Maria Anna Hofer embarked in Rotterdam? I do not know. In the emigrants list it says 'Ehe im Jahre 1847 mit Mathias Josef Witsch.' As it is phrased "vor" 1847 to the USA. So could mean she may have emigrated several years before. Oensbach does not know the exact date. Even some emigrants just left even without permission, more ladies were not recorded than men."
Per the Dutch database "Digitale Stamboom Rotterdam" (http://rotterdam.digitalestamboom.nl), she married Matthias Josephus Witsch in Rotterdam on Sept 8, 1847. Her father is given as Johannes Hofer and her mother as Maria Anna Ernst, of Oensbach.
Per "Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild", the ship "Artisan" arrived in NYC from Rotterdam, on 12 June 1871. Aboard was one Mary Witsch, age 50, of "Hudson City". She is accompanied by Louise Vinck, age 20.
Per 1880 census, Maria Witsch is living in Jersey City. She is a widow and was born about 1820. It is noted that she and her parents were from Germany. Living with her are her son, Nicholas (age 32) and two grandchildren. Nicholas is noted as having been born in Holland, as was his father. His occupation is "printer."
DOD per "New Jersey Deaths and Burials, 1720-1988" (LDS film # 589831)
The following was provided independently by Walter vom Saal:
"Marie Nanette Hofer, Sister of Christina Hofer, Married --- Witsch"
Children: Otto Witsch, Marie von Schüller. This is “Aunt Mary” who spent summers at Sharon Springs.
Actually, the widow of Otto later married von Schuller and was known in the Heppenheimer and vom Saal familes as "Aunt Mary"
