From Charles Max Heinrich's probate record in 1963, "Louie Hofer is presently actively engaged in farming and has continuously engaged in appraising farm land in Bureau, Putnam and Marshall Countries, for more than Thirty (30) years, last past, and personally and well acquainted with the value of farm land."
According to Lee Hofer, Louie spoke German with his mother and had been taught it at St. Mary's School in Henry. Lee also mentions that various people had told him that Louie helped needy families to get food during the Depression.
1940 Census: Louie was the person who answered the enumerator's question. He owned his own home which was listed as having a value of 1800 dollars, the most valuable home in the immediate area. He reported that his highest grade of school completed was eighth. He lived in the same house had been living in in 1935.

Louis Hofer, Sr.
HENRY -- Funeral services for Louis Hofer Sr., 74, retired Henry farmer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Henry, the Rev. William Feeney officiating.
Friends may call at the Ries Mortuary from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow where the Rosary will be recited at 8. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Mr. Hofer died at 8 a.m. yesterday in St. Margaret's Hospital at Spring Valley.
Born March 11, 1895 at Henry, the son of Charles and Laura Heinrich Hofer, he was married to Alta Rinehart at Peoria June 12, 1919, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Leland, Harold, and Louis K. Hofer, all of Henry; two daughters, Mrs. John Monier, of Henry; Mrs. Peter McCallister [sic] of Chillicothe; one brother, Charles Hofer of Peoria; one sister, Mrs. V.M. Kaliher of Henry; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son and one grandchild.
Mr. Hofer was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Marshall-Putnam Fair Association and of Amrican [sic] Legion, having been a veteran of World War I."

Louis E. Hofer was the only grandson of Engelbert Hofer to have male children who had male children.
According to Alta (Rinehart) Hofer, Louie suffered particular bad bout of rheumatism during their first year of marriage.
