Biography

Mette Nielsdatter Hofer was born about 1657 at the priest's farm in Romedal, a former municipality in Hedmark county, Norway. Her parents were the priest Niels Christensen Hofer (or Hofver) and Ingeborg Evensdatter, daughter to Kristiania-merchant Even Anderson and his wife Marthe Hansdatter.[1]

The local history for Romedal provides the following on pages 53-54 (in translation)[1]:

"Niels Christensen Hofer (or Hofver) was the Priest in Romedal 1655-1665. He was from Jylland, Danmark. Otherwise unknown. Birth year unknown, died 1665, the probate was recorded 25 Aug 1666. Niels Christensen Hofer was married to Ingeborg Evensdatter, daughter to Kristiania-merchant Even Anderson and his wife Marthe Hansdatter. Hofer’s children are named in the probate record as follows:
"1. Christen
"2. Even
"3. Christense (raised in the household of the previous Romedal Priest, Christen Steffensen Bang)
"4. Mette, married twice – 1st with Johan Buchardsen, 2nd with Isaac Cold – both were pastors in succession at Romedal.
"5. Sofie"

and

"Johan Buchardsen (Borchersen) Madfelt (Modfeldt). Priest in Romedal 1665-1674. Birthplace and year is unknown. He was married to Mette Nielsdatter Hofer (see 15-4 above for more about her). Four children were named in (probate) documents in 1701:
"1. Niels, ensign (the lowest officer rank in the (naval) squadron
"2. Anne, married to Cavalry Captain Trübler (see Granberg farm number 11)
"3. Ingeborg, married to Ibe Rafnsberg
"4. Marthe, married to Captain Anders Nielssen Wiborg."

An addition by Kari Lillian tells us:

"Mette Nielsdatter Hofer døde i 1701 i Romedal og skiftet ble holdt i Romedal i August 1701. 11 barn er nevnte, og eiendommene som nevnes i skiftet var Granberg, 2 skippund rugmel og kvernhus i Horne, en hud i Evenrud og jord kjøpt for 10 rdl Jølstad. Etter Mette Nielsdatters død giftet Isach Andersen Cold seg igjen med Maren Hasberg."

Which roughly translates:

Mette Nielsdatter Hofer died in 1701 in Romedal and the probate[2] was held in Romedal in August 1701. Eleven (11) children are mentioned, and the properties mentioned in the probate proceedings were Granberg farm, 2 skippund[3] of rye flour and mill house in Horne, a (cow)hide[4] in Evenrud and land bought for 10 rdl at Jølstad. After Mette Nielsdatter's death, Isach Andersen Cold remarried to Maren Hasberg.
