Gladys's father Paul was killed in an auto accident in 1927 when she was 5 years old. Her twin Sisters, Irene and Maurine, died when they were 3 months old. Gladys's mother Susanna died when she was 11 years old. She and her brother Samuel W. Hofer, after their parents died, lived with their grandmother Barbara Hofer, Uncle Sam J. Hofer, and Aunt Sarah Hofer
