Biography

Mary (Hoff) Fitz Randolph was born in Appalachia, in West Virginia. See Appalachia Project.

Mary Caroline Hoff was born in Auburn, WV in 1863, the daughter of John Hoff and Elizabeth Gaston. She grew up on the family farm in Auburn and there in 1888 married Alva Fitz Randolph from the neighboring village of Berea. The following year, Alva started his college studies at Alfred University in Alfred, NY, and the couple settled there. After he got his degree, the couple remained in the Alfred area the rest of their lives, buying a farm and raising a family of five children, and later having a house in the village itself. Mary died in 1944 in Alfred, and Alva followed in 1949. They are buried together in the Alfred Rural Cemetery in Alfred.

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in the family where Mary is a wife as their middle name as if part of their surname: In some censuses, the family is recorded using FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph as the surname including for Mary C (Catherine) FitzRandolph. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph as the married name for Mary. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in the Alva Fitz Randolph family in legal documents and when births were recorded.)
