Biography

Powell HOFF (c 1670/1680 Queens County, New York - probably 1749 Hopewell, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, that later became and is now Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey) was a son of Dirck/Derrick (Pauluszen) Hoff and Aechje Teunnise.

Powell married Rachel STILES (or STILLES) (c 1680 Flushing, Queens County, New York - prob. d. Hopewell twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ before 1749), daughter of Thomas STILES of Flushing. Powell married Rachel by 1698, when they were listed on the Flushing census without children.

In 1700, Powell Hoff was listed in Flushing, Queens County, New York[1]"AN EXACT LIST OF ALL Ye INHABITANTS NAMES WthIN Ye TOWNE OF fflUSHING AND P'CINCTS OF OLD AND YOUNG ffREEMEN & SERUANTS WHITE & BLACKE &C. 1698. . . . Dutch Inhabitants."

On the 25th day, 1st mo, 1701, Powel Huff of Maidenhead, Burlington County, New Jersey, purchased 95 acres of land from Elnathan DAVIS of Hopewell, Burlington Co, NJ, for 87 pounds, 10 shillings, New York money. This land was from an earlier DAVIS estate, divided by the widow, Mary DAVIS, among her sons, Elnathan, Jonathan, and Samuel. The land adjoined that of Samuel DAVIS, Samuel HUNT, and John BREARLEY. The deed was signed by Elnathan DAVIS and Ralph HUNT, and witnessed by John BAINBRIDGE and Johannis LOWRENCE. (Hunterdon County 1-rev:5). On the same day, Powell Huff bought 100 acres of land from Samuel DAVIS for 85 pounds. This land was bordered by Samuel HUNT. Samuel DAVIS acknowledged the sale before Joshua ELY, Justice, on 7 Apr 1702. Witnesses were Johannes LOWERENCE and Ralph HUNT.

On 25 June 1705, Powell HUFF, late of Flushing, Queens Co, NY, but now of Maidenhead, Burlington Co, NJ, and Rachel sold to John PALMAN (or TALMAN) of 300 pounds, 50 acres in Flushing on ?Matigarieous? Bay, formerly belonging to Thomas STILES, late of Flushing, dec'd, father of above Rachel. Signed by Powell HUFF and Rashel STILLES, and witnessed by Johannes LOURENCE and Samuel HUNT. (Queens Co Deeds Book 2:55/56)

This establishes that the Powell HOFF of Flushing was the same person as Powell HUFF of Maidenhead, Hopewell twp, and that his wife was Rachel STILES, dau of Thomas. The will of John TALMAN (or PALMAN) on 3 Oct 1709, gave ... "to son James TALMAN the plantation I bought of Powell Huff..." (p 250, NYGBR, July 1934, "Abstracts of Early Wills of Queens County, New York.") This must have been the land he purchased in 1705.

In 1712, he was on the tax list for Maidenhead, along with Derick and Thomas HUFF.

Powell Huff received a land grant from Daniel Coxe 26 Feb 1723 in Maidenhead, Hunterdon County.[2]

Powell HUFF seems to have lived the remainder of his life in Hopewell twp, in what became Hunterdon Co. (and apparently after his death, later became a part of Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey).[3]

On the 1741 Freeholders List for Hopewell Township, Hunterdon Co[4], there was one Powell HOFF in Hopewell twp and one in Amwell twp. The one in Hopewell twp is believed to be the correct one.

Powell HOFF made his will in Hopewell, Hunterdon, New Jersey as a yoeman on 16 Nov 1749[5]. The will was proved 28 Feb 1750. Inventory was done 27 Feb 1750/51 by Timothy TITUS and Richard PHILLIPS. Estate was worth £18.16.4.

Powell listed his children as Hannah; Richard; Rachel; and Isaac. Son Richard was to be executor. Witnesses were Thomas SUTTON, Richard PHILLIPS, and John REDFORD.

Cool. Can you include links? According to the profile, probably info that came from Max Huff: "On the 1741 Freeholders List for Hopewell Township, Hunterdon Co[3], there was one Powell HOFF in Hopewell twp and one in Amwell twp. The one in Hopewell twp is believed to be the correct one."
