Biography

Rebecca was born in 1859 in Ritchie County, Virginia (present day West Virginia), most probably on the family farm at Bone Creek near Auburn (WV). She was the daughter of John Hoff and Elizabeth Gaston. She grew up in Bone Creek, and at the age of 20 years old in 1879 she married Lewis Butcher, a young farmer, in Ritchie County. They divorced before 1884 without having children, and Rebecca remarried that year to Eusebius L. Bee, a widower and farmer, in Ritchie County, She joined him on his farm near Berea, WV; they had six children together and Rebecca worked at one point as a teacher. She died from pneumonia in 1932 at Wolf Summit, WV and is buried with her second husband in the IOOF (International Order of Odd Fellows) Cemetery in Salem, WV.

• In the 1900 census she reported having had 6 children, all still living at the time. In 1910, she reported having had 7 total, all still living, but there is no record of a birth after Hazel's in 1900.
