Biography

Samuel was born in Gilmer County, WV in 1874. He was the son of Eri Hoff and Linda Hart. His father was a farmer and a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the family seems to have moved around a bit, spending time near Union in Ritchie County, Newark in Wirt County. He started off farming in Newark, WV. He married Alice A. Darnell in 1899 in Wirt County and started a family. They had three children before Alice passed away in 1909. He remarried the following year to 17-year-old Dora Bell Price in Wirt County. They had six more children together. Samuel was part of the generation that transitioned from farming into blue collar work, Already by 1910, he was out of farming and working for railroad building trestles. in about 1915, he moved with the family to Mingo Junction, OH and started working in the Carnegie steel plant there. He retired on the pension from that job, and lived out his later years in Canton, OH. He passed away in 1960 in Canton, and is buried with his second wife, Dora, in New Alexandria Cemetery, New Alexandria, OH.
