Biography

Silas was born in 1865 on his family's farm in Bone Creek near Auburn WV. He was the son of John Hoff and Elizabeth Ann Gaston. He grew up in the Auburn area, did well in school and went to college at the University of West Virginia, culminating with a law degree. He started off as a teacher. When he was 33 years old in 1898, he married Minnie Cecil Wilson near Pennsboro, WV. They raised a family of six children together. In 1900, they were living near Morgantown, WV, probably as Silas did his law studies. He continued teaching and had a farm back in their home county of Ritchie, WV until 1913 when they moved and settled in Huntington, WV. Silas was involved in the Republican party, and held the posts of school superintendent and county prosecutor, and also continued to teach and practice law: over the course of his career, he distinguished himself as a local dignitary. His wife Minnie died in 1921, and Silas remarried in 1926 to a family friend and widow, Cora Alta (Jefferies) Prunty in Franklin, OH. Silas passed away at home in Huntington in 1944. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery there.

"Rites Thursday for S.M. Hoff

Funeral services for Silas Marion Hoff, 79, 2650 Collis Avenue, who died yesterday at 9 A.M. at his home after a brief illness, will be held tomorrow at 2:30 P.M. at the Fisher-Shelton Funeral Home with Dr. W.P. Hooper, pastor of the Highlawn Presbyterian Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. T. Henry Patterson, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. C.L. Nisbet. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until after the services. Members of the Huntington Masonic Lodge 53 will have charge of graveside services. Pallbearers will be H.E. Danford, O.E. Hodges, J.T. Pickering, Edward Mays, Lucien W. Blankenship, E.L. Hogsett, Dr. Otis G. Willson, A.M. Werninger and the following elders of the Highlawn Presbyterian Church: James Erskine, H.H. Fleming, E.M. Peoples, Sherman Yokum, Bailey D. Wilkey, Fred Wilderson, J.C. Anderson, J.W. Spessard, A.C. ONCE WAS PROSECUTOR Mr. Hoff, a retired attorney and educator, was born at Auburn, Ritchie County, on March 14, 1865, a son of the lat John and Catherine Gaston Hoff. He received his early education in the public schools and attended Buckhannon U.B. Academy, Glenville Normal School and West Virginia University, obtaining his Backelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from the latter institution. Actively identified with affairs of the Republican party, Mr. Hoff served as prosecuting attorney for two terms in Ritchie County and was also superintendent of schools there for eight years. He was a delegate to the national Republican convention in 1928. A resident of Huntington since 1913, he taught social science at Enslow School for approximately 20 years and at Marshall College for three terms. HIGH IN MASONRY Mr. Hoff was an elder of the Highlawn Presbyterian Church, a 32nd degree Mason, a charter member of the Nemesis Temple of the Shrine at Parkersburg, a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Cabell County Bar Association. In 1898 Mr. Hoff was married to Miss Minnie Cecil Wilson, descendant of a member of the first Virginia Assembly and daughter of Elizabeth Rinehart Wilson and Lerop P. Wilson, who was a leading land owner and banker in Pennsboro, Ritchie County. Surviving children by that marriage are two sons, M. Rowland Hoff of Richland, Wash., and Leroy P. Hoff of New York and three daughters, Mrs. Irvin L. Murray of Charleston, Mrs. R.W. Brooks of Huntington and Mrs. David Goodwin of Monroe, La. In 1927 he was married to Mrs. Cora Prunty, who survives. Other survivors include a step-son, Sergeant Harold Prunty, stationed at a hospital in England; 12 grandchildren, including Miss Sara Anne Pemberton and Crayton Henry Pemberton of Huntingon; two step-grandchildren, and three brothers, the Rev. L.R. Hoff of Lynwood, Calif., W.L. Hoff of Vinita, Okla., and L.L. Hoff of Cairo, W VA. A daughter, Mrs. C.H. Pemberton, preceded her father in death."

Mr. and Mrs. Hoff were the parents of eleven children that reached the years of maturity—seven sons and four daughters. "Silas Marion Hoff is at this time one of the most prominent official figures of the county. He shares (with H. B. Woods and the late T. E. Davis) the distinction of being one of the three native born sons of Ritchie that have filled the Prosecutor's chair. Mr. Hoff was born on the "Hoff homestead" below Auburn, on March 14, 1865, and by his pluck and energy has forged his way up through many dis-advantages to his present high-standing. He, like not a few others whose records are herein inscribed, began his public life as a rural pedagogue. He was graduated from the State Normal at Glenville in the class of 1881, and afterwards entered the State University, at Morgantown, where he took the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Bachelor of Laws. He served as Superintendent of the Public schools of Sistersville, and was principal of the Pennsboro school for one year; was County Superintendent for four years, and is now serving his second term as Prosecuting Attorney, and is talked of as a candidate for the Judgeship. On September 21, 1898, at high noon, he was married to Miss Minnie Wilson, daughter of the late L. P. Wilson, of Pennsboro, who was, also, a teacher, and five children are the result of this union ; viz., Rosalind Wilson, Virginia Elizabeth, Helen Paris, Marion Rowland, and Leroy P. Hoff."
