Biography

Sarah was born in 1827 in Harrison County, Virginia (present day West Virginia), probably on her family's farm in Lost Creek near West Milford. She was the daughter of Samuel Hoff and Catherine Faris. She lived with her parents until in 1866 at the age of 38 years old she married Samuel Simon Emerick, a farmer, Confederate Army veteran and recent widower 24 years older than her. Sarah joined him on his farm in Tucker township in Wirt County, West Virginia, where she kept house for Samuel and his children. Sarah and Samuel had one child together before Samuel passed away in 1877. Sarah returned with her son to live in Harrison County. She passed away there in 1889.

Children

  1. Lee Hampton, 1869-1949, m1. Luvernia E. Wiseman, 1890; m2. Amanda J. Lambert, 1903

Samuel Emerick was born in York County, Pennsylvania about the same time as Sarah's father Samuel, so the families may have long known each other. He married his first wife in Harrison County, and must have maintained relations with the folks there even though he settled in Wood County.
