Biography

Humphrey was born in 1829 in Harrison County, Virginia (present day West Virginia), probably on his family's farm near West Milford. He was the son of Samuel Hoff and Catherine Faris. His father was a successful farmer and Humphrey probably lived all of his life on his parents' farm, helping to run the farm and doing other business: in 1865, he paid tax as a cattle broker. He does not appear to have served in the Civil War, and he never married. He was 'killed accidentally' in 1870 in West Milford, as noted in his death record with no further explanation, and is buried with other family members in the Bethel Cemetery near West Milford, WV.

There are records for a Humphrey Hoff serving in the Virginia Confederate Army, but these appear to relate to another person about the same age who lived in Clark County, Virginia and was married to a Malissa.
