Biography

Born at Rector's Crossroads, he was the son of Joshua Hoge and his wife Mary Pool. William spent his childhood in Virginia. At the age of 26, he married Rachel Bowles. In 1829, he came west with his father to find land to settle. With $2000.00 he was given by his father, he was able to purchase a significant amount of property to be shared among the family. He was allowed to choose the portion he wanted, and then returned home to bring his family. The family endured some hardships, including having to leave their land when the Sac war occurred, but they persevered and became very sucessful. William lost his wife in childbirth in 1843 and would never remarry. Together they had had 15 children who's needs had become his paramount concern. He spent the remainder of his life devoted to his family and business and ultimately became one of the most prosperous businessmen in the area. He was well respected and admired.
Hoge was orginally buried in the Hoge-Holderman Cemetery. He was moved to Evergreen later by family
