Biography
John Holcroft of Holcroft, esq[1]
John was born circa 1482 (in 23 Henry VIII [22 April 1531-21 April 1532], a deposition made by him stated he was aged 50[1]).
He was the son of John Holcroft of Holcroft, and his wife, ..., daughter of Urmeston of Westleigh.[2]
John was presumably the grandson of John Holcroft and the great-grandson of Thomas Holcroft (nee FitzHugh de Hindley) & Joan, d. & coh. of Gilbert de Culceth.[2]
His paternal great-grandfather Thomas FitzHugh de Hindley, son of Hugh de Hindley of Hindley, co. Lancs., assumed the Holcroft surname after marrying into the Culceth family.[3]
His sister, Margaret, was married to James Gerard.[2]
John married a daughter and coheir of Hamnett Masey.[2]
Their children were:
- Sir John Holcroft of Holcroft, co. Lancashire, married Anne, daughter of Ralph Standish.[2]
- Sir Thomas Holcroft of Valeroyall, co. Cheshire, marshall to Mary I.[2]
