Bessie was born to James and Mabel Dunaway Holder on September 5, 1909 in Ansted, West Virginia. The family lived in Mountain Cove and Clear Fork, West Virginia before settling in Huntington before 1930. She worked as a stenographer in an insurance office.
She married Elbert Poling on May 1, 1932 in Huntington, West Virginia. They had two known children Ruth (b. 1935) and Janet (b. 1939).
Elbert and Bessie moved to Lake Mary, Florida later in life. Bessie died there on February 1, 1996 at the age of 86. She is buried alongside her husband in Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington, West Virginia.
