Biography

Earl of Kent, 8th Lord Wake, Lord Woodstock, Lord Holand. Knight of the Garter, of Ayton, Cottingham and Huntington, Yorkshire. Of Ryhall, Rutland, Privy Councillor, Justice of Hants, Surrey and Sussex, Kent and Dorset. Admiral of the Fleet to the West and North.

Edmund was born at Brockenhurst on 6 January 1382 and baptised on the 8th in the church of St. Thomas the Apostle there.[1] He was the younger son of Sir Thomas de Holand, of the same titles and brother of King Richard II, and Alice de Arundel.[1] Grandson of Sir Thomas de Holand and Joan of Kent, Sir Richard Arundel and Eleanor of Lancaster. Heir to his brother, Thomas Holand, who was beheaded 06 Jan 1400.

In 1398, Edmund, as the king's nephew, he had a grant of 100 marks per annum for life, In 1401, after his brother was beheaded, Edmund was still under age, and had a grant of 200 marks, and a grant of 100 marks from the manor of Cottingham. Edmund fought at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403.

About this time, Edmund was betrothed to Constance of York, the daughter of Sir Edmund of Langley, Duke of York and son of King Edward III. Her mother was Isabel, younger daughter of Pedro the Cruel, King of Castile and Leon. It is thought they did not marry, yet they had one daughter, Eleanor, who would be declared illegitimate, despite her suits to prove otherwise.[2] Eleanor married Sir James Tuchet, Lord Audley.[2]

Edmund did marry, to Lucia (Lucy) Visconti, the tenth and youngest daughter of Barnabo Visconti, signore of Milan and Beatrice, the daughter of Mastino della Scala, signore of Verona. They married at St Mary Overy, Southwark, Surrey on 24 Jan 1407, but had no children. She became the Countess of Kent.

In 1405, Edmund and the king's son, Thomas, commanded an English fleet, sailed to Sluys and burnt out four great ships, sailed on to Normandy where they ravaged the country and burnt down 36 towns.

Sir Edmund died 15 Sept 1408,[3] slain in the attack on the Isle of Brehat, Brittany. Some records state he was buried at Bourne Abbey, others state he was buried on the island of Lavrec, one the Brehat archipelago (islands). Remains of an important warrior who died from a serious chest wound have been found there, and thought to be Edmund.

His heirs were Edmund son of Eleanor his sister, Joan his second sister, Margaret his third sister, Eleanor his fourth sister, and Elizabeth his fifth sister.[3]

EDMUND HOLAND, K.G., 4th Earl of Kent, Lord Wake, Lord Woodstock, Lord Holand, of Ware, etc., 4th son, born 9 Jan. 1382. He fought at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. During this period, he was allegedly betrothed to marry CONSTANCE OF YORK, widow of Thomas le Despenser, L.G., and daughter of Edmund of Langley, L.G., Duke of York (son of Edward III, King of England), by Isabel, younger daughter and co-heiress of Pedto el Cruel, King of Castile and Leon. It is doubtful that this betrothal, if valid, resulted in actual marriage. They had one daughter, Eleanor. He married at St. Mary Overy, Southwark, Surrey 24 Jan. 14067 LUCY (or LUCIA) VISCONTI, 10th and youngest daughter of Barnabo Visconti, signore of Milan, Lodi, Bologna, Pontremoli, and Parma, by Beatrice, daughter of Mastino II della Scala, signore of Verona. They had no issue. SIR EDWARD HOLAND, 4th Earl of Kent, Lord Wake died 15 Sept. 1408, being slain in the attack on the Isle of Brehat, Brittany, and was buried at Bourne Abbey, Lincolnshire. Lucy, Countess of Kent, Lady Wake died 14 April 1424, and was buried in the church of the Austin Friars, London. She left a will dated 11 April 1424, proved 31 May 1424.

It's on the wikipedia page listed on Lucia Visconti's profile. States they were only married a year when he passed. But this may be inaccurate if he passed in 1408. But they were only married until Edmund passed.

source for end of his marriage to Lucy in 1407? Richardson has her outliving Edmund.

Removed Constance York as spouse as they were not married but did have issue.

It was personally written on the Find A Grave source that was listed at the very bottom. My experience with the people that maintain these pages are similar to Wikitree. So I would say the source is more viable than Wikipedia. But if there are other sources that concur with Wikipedia then I would say it is accurate.

Dodie - I don't see a source in the profile for a marriage. Do you have one?

Please do not use Wikipedia as a viable source of information. If one of the viable sources that is listed below states the information, please provide link. Otherwise, the information that was stated is that they were married and the date was given for that marriage.

ah. I think I answered my own question. Wikipedia says Edmund had an affair with Constance that resulted in Eleanor Holland. For now, I'll put "not" in marriage location.

I unchecked the option to hide his marriage to Constance York-1252. If that option had been checked on purpose, could you explain why? Thanks!
