Obituary

Connor, Elaine Marie (Hollenbeck) 83 May 11, 1930 Sept. 20, 2013 Elaine Connor, 83, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 in her home, on the land that she loved and treasured. Born in Portland, she was the first born child of Frank and Mildred Hollenbeck. Elaine attended Trout Lake, Wash. Grade School and High School, graduating in 1948. As a young girl, she loved to fish, pick wild huckleberries and go camping with her family. In August 1948, Elaine and her sister took jobs in St. Paul, working in the hop fields. While there, she met Jack Connor and fell, in her words, "head over heels" for him. She and Jack "courted" through the fall, and Elaine took a job at Portland City Hall. Jack proposed that winter, saying, "We should get married before planting season starts." Jack and Elaine married on April 24, 1949, at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Portland and settled on the hillside family farm in St. Paul, overlooking the Willamette Valley, where they farmed their entire lives. Elaine was a member of the Adventist Church in Newberg, a richly involved member of the St. Paul community and a generous friend to all. She was an active parent supporter and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports. She loved to travel and took many memorable trips with the Chemeketa farm group. She loved to grow flowers and produce and preserve food for her family and friends. She was a tireless volunteer, helping her church with food boxes and feeding the needy. Elaine is survived by her children, Lauren, Patricia (Mark) Banning, Matthew (Shelly), Joseph (Michelle), William (Aimee), Sean (Allison) and Patrick (Jody); many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Lois; brother, William; dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack"; and brother, Richard. Elaine's memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at the Newberg Adventist Church. Private interment in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Paul Parochial School General Fund may be made, P.O. Box 188, St. Paul, OR 97137.
