Note: One source says of him, apparently confusing him with someone else,perhaps his father, that he was a gentleman of the north of Ireland, one of the cavaliers who came over with Raleigh, or soon afterward, who was in the civil service of the British government at the beginning of the American Revolution, though siding with the colonists Washington gave him a commission in the colonial Army which he declined as it was not equal in rank to his former position[19]
