Nancy Holloway (Hammontree) was born in Lincoln Co., NC in about 1779. She was one of the unnamed females in the 1790 census enumeration of her father, Joseph Holloway. Nancy's older sister Sarah married Jeremiah Hammontree in Lincoln Co., NC in 1795, and then Nancy married James Hammontree in Blount Co., TN in 1800. The Holloway-Hammontree families began moving from North Carolina to Tennessee in about 1795. Joseph Holloway (1750-1820) was the only adult Holloway male who made this move at the time, and thus there is no other candidate to have been Nancy's father. Joseph was on the tax list in Blount County in 1800. His brother, the Rev. William "Billy" Holloway Jr. did not arrive in Tennessee until years later. Nancy's husband James Hammontree appears in early tax lists of Blount County beginning in 1800, enumerated alongside Holloway relatives who lived in the community of Six Mile, located in southern Blount County, Nancy and James seem to have lived in Six Mile until James was assigned property from the estate of George Wallace in 1808. This property was located about 10 miles west of Six Mile, situated in what was then Morganton, southwestern Blount County. This property was next door to James' parents, William and Patsy. Nancy died there in 1861. This area is now situated in Greenback, Loudon County. Two of Nancy's children (John and Sarah Ann) indicate in the 1880 census that their mother was born in North Carolina.
