Biography

Samuel Henry was born about 1820 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. He was the son of Gray Holloway and Maryanna Baker.

He married his first cousin, Martha Frances Holloway, on 25 Oct 1844 in Mecklenburg Co, VA. Martha F. was the daughter of Samuel's uncle William Holloway Jr (abt.1785-1847). They issued at least two, but likely three of the children attributed to Samuel based on birth dates.

Samuel's second marriage was to Martha A. Walker on 7 Dec 1853 also in Mecklenburg Co, VA. They issued several children.

He died about 1862 in Warren Co., NC according to his probate file there. Burial details are currently unknown.

Research Notes

Samuel's wives, having both been named Martha, are susceptible to conflation in family trees. There are distinct marriage records in 1844 and 1853 pertaining to Samuel backed up in subsequent records. Samuel appears in the 1850 census with first wife Martha F. Holloway and two daughters, Eugenia and Mariah, in Granville Co., NC. He didn't marry Martha A. Walker until 1853. Martha A. Walker has a distinct 1850 census record in Mecklenburg Co., VA with her parents Edward and Elizabeth.

His probate record in 1862 indicates he died before the plausible conception date for two of his children as currently represented on the linked profiles. Specifically, there is scant evidence of his currently linked son Henry Holloway, Jr. More research is needed to understand the connection being made.
