He enlisted for the First World War in response to being balloted, Feb 1917. He was 6'1, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, Anglican, and a taxi driver. He did not see overseas service; being discharged due to a foot disability.

On 2 October 1917 at Te Kuiti, he married Mary Anne Duffy, the eldest daughter of Mr James Duffy of Kurow, Otago.

He passed away at Aria, Taranaki, on 21 Nov 1918 "age 32", leaving no lawful children at that time.[5][6]
