Biography

Phebe Holloway was born about 1755 in Cumberland County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Holloway Jr. and Elizabeth Robertson.

Phebe's father died young, when Phebe was just a young child. Her mother remarried to Daniel Hogan by c1758 and Daniel became the guardian for the three daughters of John and Elizabeth Holloway, including Phebe. There are a series of court records documenting Daniel's guardianship.

By the time Phebe reached 18 she married Jeremiah Puckett. We don't have a date for the marriage but it was likely sometime around 1771-72. They soon moved to Bedford County and surveyed about 204 acres on Indian Run in 1774. Jeremiah received a land grant for this land on 1 May 1784 (Land Office Grants M, p. 90). This part of Bedford Co. became part of Franklin Co. in 1786. The land adjoined that obtained earlier by William Holloway (Phebe's uncle) and Joel Meador, also formerly from the Cumberland Co. area.

In 1807, Jeremiah and Phebe sold 120 acres of this land to John Hook (Franklin Co. DB 5, p. 414). And in 1813, they sold 103 acres to John Oyler (Franklin Co. DB 7, p. 67). There is an obvious discrepancy between the 204 acres granted and the 223 acres sold, but the surveys and deeds involved contain so many errors it has not been possible to refine the acreage exactly.

It seems obvious that Jeremiah and Phebe relocated c1813. Additional research is needed.
