DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Bethia by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Bethia:
A1.) The wife of this Jonas Weed (1746-1704, Father Jonas Weed, mother Mary Scofield) is Bethia Holly (1654-1713,Father John Galen Holly, mother Mary Agnes Waitsill).
A2a.) They had a daughter named Bethia Weed (1686-1704) who probably was not married.
A2b.) They also had a daughter named Abigail Weed (1695-1780) who married Jeremiah Scofield (1691-1762, father Richard Scofield, mother Ruth Brundish or Brundage.
B1.) Jeremiah Scofield (1691-1762) and Abigail Weed (1695-1780) had a daughter named
Bethia Scofield.
B2.) This Bethia’s maiden name was Scofield, and the trees so far that have her married to Edmund Lockwood seem to be incorrect by virtue of name spelling and place of origin.
C1.) The Wikitree person Bethia (Holly) Scofield, ID Holly-953 does not exist.
C2.) No one by that name married any of the Jonas Weed(s).
C3.) I made the mistake of creating her while I was in a hurry and got the Holly, Weed and Scofield names mixed up for her – I was totally wrong – but can not seem to un-create her.
C4.) The citation of The History of the Families of Old Fairfield, Vol 1, Surnames G-I, page 290 is for Bethia Holly who married Jonas Weed but it does not give the name Scofield. It only says this at the very bottom of the page:
"Bethia [daughter of John Holly], d. at Stamford, 24 Dec. 1713; m. 16 Nov 167__, Jonas Weed."
C7.) The citation The Great Migration Begins on bottom of page 1958 does talk about the variance in the “two” Jonas Weed men being only one man. And at the top is the reference to the Bethia Holly I meant to enter (marrying Weed, not Scofield) as follows:
"JONAS, b. say 1645; m. 16 November 167(0) Bethia Holly [TAG 11:33, citing Stamford TR 1:113]"
C6.) I had all my references and trees out and looked at the wrong name when I created her – my bad, my total bad.
Holly-953 should not even exist. She isn't a person, but rather the incorrect combination of two people I got wrong. I don't know how to delete her, but the Holly-953 I created the other day needs to be deleted as a person. I could only remove her as the wife of one of the Jonas Weeds
No, M Cole, please don't do that. I've left a couple of messages on your and her page and hope they are clear and thorough enough. If not, I'll be back & available for discussion this afternoon. Thank you so much.
Hi Barbara, From your comments it sounds like you would like to delete the other Bethiah Holly. But we can't delete profiles on WikiTree so we merge them. Only distinguishing difference between the two profiles, is the one has Scoffield as an "Other Last Name". I'd suggest removing the other last name, and merging Holly-953 & Holly 90.
Holly-953 and Holly-90 are not ready to be merged because: I'm confused between Bethia Holly who married Jonas Weed and Bethia Scofield whose mother was Abigail Weed married to Jeremiah Scofield. Let me do some digging and get back. Thank you so much for bringing this to light.
Note in The Great Migration Begins: "...Savage divided this Jonas into two men, a father at Watertown and Wethersfield, and a son at Stamford, but the records are consistent with the assumption that only one Jonas Weed was present in New England during these years." Page 1958
Holly-90 and Holly-461 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicates. However, the Jonas Weed she is attached too may have a mother that is incorrect.
Holly-269 and Holly-90 appear to represent the same person because: same birth place, marriage, death place. Dates are a little different. Birth date may be a guess, and death dates will resolve with research and primary sources (not user-generated, Find a Grave, unsourced geni, etc which are not used for pre-1700, if we have better sources)
Holly-269 and Holly-424 do not represent the same person because: changing this to a merge into Holly-90 as it seems to be the lowest numbered profile with the correct spelling of the last name at birth. Thanks!
Holly-269 and Holly-424 appear to represent the same person because: I have requested the merge of Weed-32 and Weed-131 which represent Holly-269 and Holly-424 spouses. The Holly profiles represent the same individual. the variance for the birth year should follow the Holly-269 profile which also includes more complete and specific source material. Thanks.
