Biography

Elisha W. Holmes is the Patriarch of the vast South Mississippi Holmes family. Having been established in Wilkes/Lincoln County, Georgia, Elisha Holmes left there and planted his family in the primeval forests west of the Lower Pearl in the Mississippi Territory. The late Dr. Wendell B. Holmes (the Holmes family genealogist) of McComb, Mississippi said there were more than 20,000 descendants today from Elisha & Sarah (Stovall) Holmes.[1]

Elisha was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church. He was brought before the church in 1806 for using improper language and was expelled for his "indifference".

Elisha and Sarah, "Sally", immigrated to Mississippi with families that included the Stovalls and Foils. About 1814 they traveled the Lower Federal Road (also known as "The Three Chopped Way").

Settling on Collins Creek, Old Pike County, Mississippi, they were the original ancestors of the Holmes family in Pike County. Elisha Holmes was a successful blacksmith. His large family was well respected. His home was located three miles east of the present Tylertown, Walthall County, MS, now known as the "Jap Holmes Place". Rilas Family Gen.
