Biography
Born on the family plantation near Clinton, Sampson County, North Carolina. Son of Gabriel Holmes Sr and brother of the 21st Governor of NC, Gabriel Holmes. He married Grace Cooper.
Gabriel and Mary Holmes had the following children: Brig. General Hardy Holmes (d.1827) who married Feriby Moore and lived near Clinton; Ann Holmes who married (1772) Captain Michael J. Kenan and lived near Milledgeville, Georgia; Dorothy Holmes (1758-1838)who married John Sherrard and lived in Wayne county; Penelope Holmes who married Brig. General Thomas Overton (1753-1825)and lived near Nashville, Tenn.; Owen Holmes (1762-1814) who married Ann Clinton and lived near Clinton; Lewis Holmes who married Grace Cooper and moved south; and Gabriel Holmes, Jr. (1769-1829).
Gabriel Holmes, Jr.[*Governor*] attended school in Fayetteville, and at Parnassus Academy in Iredell County.His father died and in 1790 we find him at home with his mother as head of the family.He attended Harvard college for three years and then studied law under Judge J.L. Taylor in Raleigh. He was admitted to the bar in 1790 and set up practice at the Sampson Courthouse. He represented sampson county in the Legislature on four occasions abetween 1793-1813.[1]
