Biography

Artemas was born on 9 July 1814 in Peterboro, New Hampshire, the son of Nathaniel Holmes and Sarah Hoar.^[1] He was baptized on 16 July 1815 in Wakefield, Carroll County, New Hampshire.^[2]

Artemus attended Dartmouth College, beginning in 1831. In that year he was a member of the Social Friends' Society.^[3] He graduated in 1835. He worked as a merchant in Galena, Illinois.^[4]

Artemus was married first to Eliza Bloomer on 9 Jan 1845.^[5][6]

Artemus L. Holmes was married on 16 July 1848 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois to Mary M. Bloomer.^[7]

"Mr. Holmes was a member of the old Galena bar."^[8]

On 9 July 1860, A. L. Holmes, his wife Mary, their children Augusta, Artemas, and Robert; and two Irish servants, Fanny Corcoran and Mary Cross, lived in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. Artemas worked as a lawyer and owned $4,000 in personal estate.^[9]

He passed away in 1871. ^[10]
