Joseph was born to George and Deborah Holmes in 1637, apparently on their passage from Nazeing, England to Massachusetts Bay or shortly thereafter. His parents settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay.[1]
Joseph Holmes married Elizabeth Clapp, about 1660 in Dorchester.[2]
