Mississippi, USA

Death: Sep. 30, 1909
Pike County

Born to Benjamin Holmes (1801-1865) & Nancy Mary Sumrall Holmes (1808-1895). Needham married Martha Lenore Conerly (1858-1916) on Dec. 2, 1873.

Ten children:

  1. Nancy "Nannie" Leticia Holmes Hales (1874-1963)
  2. Jabez Newton Holmes (1876-1959)
  3. Emily Levicia Holmes Lewis (1879-1967)
  4. Jane Elizabeth Holmes Lewis (1881-1967)
  5. Benjamin Cullen Holmes (1883-1942)
  6. Jesse Olen Holmes (1886-1919)
  7. Flora Rebecca Holmes (1889-1896)
  8. James Taylor Holmes (1892-1978)
  9. Frank John Holmes (1895-1973)
  10. Alton Eugene Holmes (1899-1947)

Nine of these children survived to adulthood.

Needham & Martha were members of Holmesville Baptist Church, where Needham was ordained a deacon in 1900. He was a delegate to the Bogue Chitto Baptist Association in 1888.

Martha's mother, Levisa Lewis Conerly, was living with Needham & Martha in the 1880 Pike County census, age 74.

Needham Holmes' parents were Benjamin Holmes (1801-1865) & Nancy Mary Sumrall (1808-1895). Benjamin, born in GA, moved to MS with his parents and settled on the east side of Magee's Creek, two miles north of China Grove. He was a farmer and made plantation bells. They had 16 children. Benjamin & Mary Holmes are buried in the Benjamin Holmes Cemetery, Walthall County, MS. However, I have heard that these graves have been lost to logging.

From the New Orleans (LA) Times Picyacune, Nov. 5, 1909:

McComb, Miss., Nov. 4 - This county loses a valuable citizen in the death of Deacon Needham Holmes, which occurred at his home, near Holmesville. He was 64 years, 11 months and 24 days of age, and was united with McGee's Creek Baptist Church in 1863 and was ordained a deacon at Holmesville in 1900. He was married Dec. 2, 1873, to Miss Martha L. Conerly who, with several children and grandchildren, survives him. He has been a sufferer for many years. He was a son of Benjamin and Nancy Holmes, who trace their ancestors as residents of this state back to pioneer days.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Needham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Needham:
