Biography

John Holmes was born about 1636, the son of John Holmes, who migrated to Plymouth circa 1632, and his wife Sarah (surname unknown in the sources noted here)[1] [2]

On November 21, 1661, John Holmes married Patience Faunce, the daughter of John and Patience (Morton) Faunce of Plymouth[1] [3]. Their children included[2]:

  1. John Holmes, b. 22 Mar 1662/63, who married Sarah Thomas in 1689
  2. Nathaniel Holmes, b. about 1666; d. between 23 Jan 1735 and 18 May 1737. He m. Eleanor BAKER 13 Mar 1700 in Plymouth. They had children Mercy, Nathaniel, Joshua, Patience, Eleanor, Joseph, Benjamin, Richard, and Melatiah
  3. Ebenezer Holmes, b. about 1670. He m. Phebe BLACKMER 26 Dec 1695 in Plymouth. They had children Ebenezer and Elizabeth.
  4. Thomas Holmes, b. about 1673; d. before 12 Mar 1754. He m. Joanna MORTON 6 Jan 1696/97 in Plymouth. They had children Joanna, Jemima, Thomas, and Abner.
  5. Joseph Holmes, b. about 1676. He m. Lydia (GRISWOLD) BARTLETT between 1703 and 1705. They had children Fear and Joseph.
  6. Desire Holmes, b. about 1679. She m. John CHURCHILL, son of Joseph and Sarah (HICKS) CHURCHILL and brother of Margaret CHURCHILL, 19 Nov 1700 in Plymouth. They had children Priscilla, Samuel, Sarah, Phebe, and Rebecca.

Patience (Faunce) Holmes died about 1680.

John married second Patience (Bonum) Willis, the daughter of George and Sarah (Morton) Bonum and the widow of Richard Willis, about 1681 in Plymouth[1] [2], and their children included:

  1. Richard Holmes, b. about 1682; d. before 2 May 1718. He m. Hester WORMWELL 20 Mar 1711/12 in Plymouth. They had children Mary, Gershom, and Sylvanus.
  2. Patience Holmes, bp. 1684. She m. James COBB 20 Jul 1705 in Plymouth. They had children Melatiah, James, Gershom, Martha, Mehitabal, Sarah, and George.
  3. Mehitabel Holmes, b. before 1687. She m. Manasseh KEMPTON 4 Feb 1713/14 in Plymouth.
  4. Sarah Holmes, b. before 1690. She m. Samuel NELSON 12 Sep 1718 in Plymouth.
  5. George Holmes, b. about 1690.

John Holmes died intestate on 31 Jul 1697 in Plymouth[4] His wife Patience was granted the letter of administration. His inventory was taken on 13 August 1697. [5]

On 29 September 1700, the heirs, his widow Patience, John Holmes (eldest son), Richard Holmes, Patience, Mehitabel, Sarah, George, Nathaniel, Ebenezer Thomas, Joseph, and Desire, wife of John Churchill signed a distribution agreement settling his estate.[6]

Jabez Holmes is my G-G-G grandfather Of Course My Holmes Line was where my research began And Since Jabez was A Pioneer to Chatham-Kent Ontario Canada There is a ton of info on him and his children and grandchildren I was able to Find enough Files On Him within a few weeks after My Grandfather Uriel told me who his Grandfather was (Henry Holmes) and who his Great Grandfather was Jabez Holmes All I had to do is Find his records which were plenty!! The Frustration Has been 35 years of Endless possibilities of Who His Parents may be I have about 10 notebooks Full of Holmes Names and records without a Concrete Result after 35 years!!! I have 1 notebook Full Of Just Jabez Holmes' alone!! All of My Holmes DNA Matches from Ancestry can prove they are descendants Of John Holmes The Messenger!!
