James Coleman married Ellen Horan [aka Horn/Horne/Hoarn] in 1840. The marriage was registered in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan in the third quarter of the year.[1]

In 1841 James Coalman (age 20-24) lived at Nursay Row in Gelligaer, Glamorgan with his wife Ellen (15-19), brother-in-law John Hoarn (30-34), and three others: Catherne Murphy (20-24), Mary Murphy (0), and John Coahellin (25-29).[2]
Based on the birthplaces of his children, James and his family moved to London between 1844 and 1846.
In 1851 James Coleman (age 36, Labourer) lived at Rosemary Lane Court in Saint Mary Whitechapel, London with his wife Ellen (33, Labourer's Wife) and five children: Julia (9, School), John (7, School), James (5, School), Ellen (3, At Home), and Bridgt (1, At Home).[3]
In 1861 James Coleman (age 45, Gas Stoker) lived at Derby Street in Saint Botolph without Aldgate, London with his wife Ellen (40, General Labourer) and seven children: John (17), James (17[~15], Scholar), Ellen (12, Scholar), Bridget (10), Hugh (9), Catherine (9), and Edward (3), as well as grandson William Hartland (1).[4]
In 1871 James Coleman (age 50, Gas Stoker) lived in London Saint Botolph without Aldgate with his wife Ellen (50) and two sons: Edward (14, Scholar) and Richard (9, Scholar), as well as his brother-in-law John Horan (60, Paver Out of Employ).[5]
James Coleman passed away in 1872, aged 51 years. His death was registered in Whitechapel in the last quarter of the year.[6]
