Fergus Holmes was born about 1750. A type-written Holmes family biography says: "Fergus Holmes", the first Holmes we have any record of, was born in Ireland. One record says Cork, another Dublin. The date he came to America is not known. He settled in North Carolina. W. S. Holmes III was a great-great-grandson of Fergus Holmes."
