Biography

Samuel Holmes, son of Jedediah Holmes and Mary Kinney, was born about 1828 in New York. He is not to be confused with Samuel Albro Holmes. [1]

In 1850 Samuel Holmes is recorded as being twenty-one years of age and living in the household of his father in Amity township, Allegany county, New York. [2]

At some time between 1850 and 1855 Samuel removed from New York to Wisconsin. Samuel wed Clara L. (b. 1834 in NY) before 1855. They had at least one daughter:

  1. Sophronia N. (Holmes) Ferguson, born in 1855 in Wisconsin.

From 1856 to 1873 Samuel was a leader in a secret lodge in Paw Paw, Michigan. [3]

In 1860 Samuel Holmes is recorded as being thirty-two years of age and living in Paw Paw village, Lafayette township, Van Buren county, Michigan. [4]

In 1870 Samuel Holmes is recorded as being forty-one years of age and living in Bloomingdale township, Van Buren county, Michigan. [5]

In 1877 Samuel was admitted to the bar in Paw Paw, Michigan. [6]

In 1880 Samuel Holmes is recorded as being fifty-two years of age and living in Lawton township, Van Buren county, Michigan. [7]

Samuel Holmes died before 1900 in Eureka, California.

In 1913 Holmes, Clara L., widow Samuel is recorded living in Eureka, California. [8]

  1. Electronic letter of 5 Dec 2016 from Dan J. Ferris to Albertus Text: "I think the information about this Samuel Holmes includes information about Samuel Albro Holmes who was the son of Asahal and Phoebe Albro-Holmes, born on 16 May 1829, died 25 Jan 1910. The Samuel Holmes who was the son of Jedediah Holmes was born Abt 1828 and appears to have died prior to 1900. This Samuel had a daughter named Sophrania who married George Ferguson and they had a daughter named Pearl. It appears this Samuel and his family moved to CA after he became an attorney in Paw Paw, MI. He may have helped start the Holmes Lumber business in the late 1800's in Eureka, CA." Nota bene: the information regarding Samuel Albro Holmes, referred to in the above letter, has now been deleted from this profile; it regarded dates of birth and death taken from a FamilySearch Ancestral File, which wrongly ascribes to Samuel Albro Holmes the parents of this profile's Samuel Holmes: hence the confusion. 5 Dec 2016 - Albertus
