Biography

Catherine was born about 1675. She was a daughter of Obadiah Holmes.

She was first married to Nathaniel Bacon prior to 1695, evidenced by a deed made by Obadiah Holmes on 5th September 1701, selling 100 acres of land, described as part of 200 acres granted to Nathaniel Bacon and Katherine his wife on 14th April 1695 by Joshua Barkstead. This deed by Holmes was made shortly after the death of Nathaniel, suggesting it may have been part of the administration of his estate, although Nathaniel had named his "brother" Jonathan Holmes as an executor.[1] The original deed from Barkstead, appears to have been for two parcels totaling 200 acres, described as 180 acres next to Jonathan Holmes, and 20 acres of meadow next to Obadiah Holmes.[2]

Catherine was widowed sometime between 25th May and 11th June 1701, when the inventory of Nathaniel Bacon's estate was taken.

Nathaniel Bacon's will was dated May 25, 1701 in Cohansey at Salem in the Province of New Jersey. He named a wife, Katherine, and three children, Nathaniel (the eldest son), Jeremiah, and Lydia, all under 10 years old. The executors were his wife and "my loving brothers Jonathan Holmes [a brother-in-law] and William Bacon." [3]

Research Notes

Catherine Holmes was the widow of Nathaniel Bacon, who did not die until 1701. Her brother Jonathan Holmes was named as an executor in Nathaniel's will. Richard Robbins, on the other hand, sold part of his land in Woodbridge with his wife Hannah (Moore) on 18th September 1696...so the 1695 birth of a daughter to Catherine & Robbins simply does not work.
