William was born in Ireland to Joseph Holmes and Jane McCullagh in 1812. He was one of the first of the Holmes family to come to Canada and settled first in the area known as Huron Tract sometime in the 1830's.
He married twice. First to Mary Richardson about 1841 and then to Charlotte McCullagh about 1852. Mary and William may have had two children, Jane (1844-1926) and Anne-Marie (1846-1918)[1]. Charlotte and William had at least three children: Charlotte Amelia (1853-1943); Laura (1855-1867) and Arabella (1858-1929).
The family moved to British Columbia where both Charlotte and Arabella married. William is listed as a farmer on the census records and on his death record.
William died on September 10, 1907 in British Columbia.
