Biography

Moses M. Holshouser was born on 26 February 1832 in Dongola, Union County, Illinois to Andrew Holshouser and Elizabeth Barrier/ Berger [1] [2]. In 1846, Moses’ father died leaving his mother as the head of the household. In 1850, Moses was living with his mother and 2 brothers, Alfred and Henry, in Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois [3]. Moses was 17 years of age and in the census record the families last name was spelled “Holthouer”.

Moses M. Holshouser married Martha Wood on 30 April 1854 in Alexander County, Illinois. [4]. [5]. It is unknown what happened with this marriage but there is no evidence of any children from this union.

Four years later, on 29 July 1858, Moses Holshouser married Lucinda Worthington in Alexander County, Illinois. [6] [7]. In 1859, the couple had one child, James Alvin. By the 1850 census, the couple and their 6-month-old son were living in Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois [8]. The couple were listed as 27 years of age and Moses’ occupation was listed as a farmer. The couple had two children, James Alvin and Nancy E. Lucinda (Worthington) Holshouser died in 1863. Leaving Moses to raise his 2 children.

Four years later on 5 March 1867, Moses Holshouser married Margaret K (Miller) Davidson in Union County, Illinois [9] [10]. Margaret had been married prior to Ohman Morgan Davidson who died in 1863. Margaret had birthed 7 children with 4 of the children dying during infancy and 3 children surviving, Daniel, Ida, and Henry. In 1869, the couple had their only child Ella. In the 1870 census, the couple were living in Dongola, Union County, Illinois [11]. Moses’ occupation was listed as a farmer. In their household, the only child listed was Nancy Holshouser who was 8 years of age. However, living next door to the couple were the children from the couple’s previous marriage including Daniel Davidson age 25 years, Ida J. Davidson age 22 years, Henry Davidson age 6 years, and James Holshouser age 10 years. Also, in the household was Margaret’s brother William Miller, age 26 years and her mother Nancy Miller aged 67 years. In the 1880 census, the couple were living in Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois with one daughter Ellen age 11 years [12]. Moses was listed as 48 years of age and Margaret was listed as 51 years of age. The last name was spelled as “Holtzhouser.” By 1900, the couple was living in Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois [1]. Moses’ occupation was listed as a bartender. The couple reported that they had been married for 35 years and Margaret had birthed 5 children with 3 living. Most likely she misunderstood the question and listed 5 children who were no longer alive since her daughter Ida Jane had died in 1897. In 1906, Margaret’s son Daniel Davidson died. In 1910, the couple were living in Mill Creek Union County, Illinois [13]. the couple were living on a farm, but Moses’ occupation was listed as “none”. Margaret listed that she had 9 children with only 2 children were living, most likely James Holshouser and Ella (Holshouser) Morris. In 1914, Margaret died.

On 6 May 1917, Moses M. Holshouser died at the home of his son, James Holshouser, in Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois [1]. Moses was buried on 7 May 1917 in Thebes Cemetery, Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois [14]. Moses was
