George Holt was born March 5, 1898 in Winterset, Madison, Iowa, United States.[1]

In the 1900 census George (age 2) was the son of Edgar Holt in Center Township, Madison, Iowa, United States.[2]

On June 1, 1916, George W. Holt was listed in the Census of the Prairie Provinces as one of the soldiers from the Cosmo area near Sangudo, north west of Edmonton, Alberta, who were serving in the war, either overseas or in Canada. His entry says he was at Sarcee (a military training camp in Calgary, Alberta) and that his (usual) place of habitation was Section 57, Range 6, west of the 5th Meridian. His age is recorded as 21, birthplace as United States and religion as Baptist. His immigration year is given as 1913.[3]

Private George W. Holt, Service Number: 898028, born at Winterset, Iowa, U.S.A. of the Canadian Infantry 49th Bn., died in Belgium on October 30, 1917, aged 19 years, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, panel 30, Ypres/Ieper, Belgium. He was the son of Son of Edgar J. and Launa (Elsbury) Holt, of Cosmo, Alberta.[4]

George had three older brothers and a sister. According to a family story, the Holts arrived in Lethbridge, Alberta about 1909 and later moved on to Cosmo.[5]
