Obituary

Maynard Brian Holt Sr. passed away peacefully Sunday, April 12, 2015, at his home in Lapwai. Maynard's early years were spent in the Pierce area as a young man with his family. In later years, the family moved to the Orofino area, with many relatives and clans from the Ahsahka community. He attended high school in Lapwai. Prior to his married life, Maynard ranched and farmed with his father, Lewis Holt, and mother Cora Ellenwood, in the Craigmont area. He enjoyed this way of life, and the people associated with it. Maynard was married to Loretta Burke and had two sons, Brian and Maynard Holt Jr., both of Lapwai. Maynard and Loretta later parted ways, but remained friends. Maynard then married Verla Jackson of Kamiah. They later parted ways, and remained friends as well. He then married Yvonne Weaskus of Lapwai. They had three children, including Daniel Peters of Worley, Idaho; Vernon Peters and Cora Holt preceded him in death. This marriage ended in divorce in later years. He then married Sylvia Allman of Portland, Ore. They later divorced. Maynard was very honored to have been the groundskeeper for the Nez Perce National Historical Park at Spalding. He remained in this capacity until his retirement. He continued his friendship with those he met in this position until his death. Maynard had many enjoyable activities throughout his life, such as hunting, fishing, camping with family and friends, playing pool with his many friends and playing basketball as a member of the Clearwater Valley Indians from the Kamiah area. He enjoyed watching sports and sharing these times with his family. He loved to sweat at the Spalding Sweathouse and the community sweathouse. He had many friends who also shared this special time with him. He was baptized at the North Fork Presbyterian Church at Ahsahka and continued this belief throughout his life, which included supporting all churches. He knew his inheritance was in heaven. Maynard was a member of the Nez Perce Tribal Elders and enjoyed traveling the Northwest as a part of the Elder's Day events. He made many friends on these trips. Maynard was a member of a large family. His two older brothers, Reggie Seltice and Norman Holt, and younger sister Claudia Holt-Barnes preceded him in death. He is survived by brothers Ronald Holt, Lewis Holt Jr., Levi Holt, David Holt and Virgil Holt Sr. of Lapwai, Adrian Holt and Marcelline Meza of the Yakima Valley. His surviving children are Brian Holt Sr. of Lapwai, Maynard Holt Jr. of Lapwai and Daniel Peters of Worley, Idaho. Maynard was the proud uncle and grandfather to many young people. Maynard's wishes were to be cremated upon death, and buried near his father in Ahsahka. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the North Fork Presbyterian Church in Ahsahka, to be officiated by Mary Jane Miles.[1]
