Biography

Joseph was born 28 Feb 1716 in Andover, MA.[1]

Joseph married Mary (Abbott) Holt 14 October 1742 in [2][3]

Joseph died in 1754. He wrote his will on 16 February 1754 and his estate was in probate on 25 April 1754.[4] Joseph pre-deceased his father and his father Thomas named Joseph's sons Abiel and Joseph in his will.

In his will written 16 February 1754 (probate 26 Apr 1754), Joseph Holt bequeaths to beloved wife Dorcas the use of all the real estate, mansion house, and barn until his youngest son Joseph reaches age seven years four months old. He adds several stipulations related Dorcas keeping the farm and barn in good repair. After son Joseph reaches age seven, Dorcas will have the use of one-third of the estate. Dorcas receives all the husbandry tools, smith tools, and smith shop which are hers forever except that part of the estate that he leaves to his two daughters Mary Holt and Sarah Holt. He bequeaths to Dorcas’s daughter Dorcas Frost £3.6.8 for her service while she was with the family. His two sons Abiel and Joseph are to receive two-thirds of the real estate and are to pay to their sister Mary and Sarah £13.6.8 when they reach age twenty-one. He also bequeaths to his two daughters household items that belonged to their mother which are currently in the care of Stephen Abbott in Andover. His four children will equally divide the books. Wife Dorcas and brother Thomas Holt are named executors. Real estate was valued at £200.

Research Notes

There are several different versions of Joseph and Mary's marriage record on FamilySearch, all handwritten copies of the original records. All record the marriage on the same date, as well as recording the filing of intentions on 4 September 1742.

Notes

  • Note N373Joseph & Mary came to Andover, 1744, soon after their marriage and lived on the Lancaster road, near her relative, Jonathan Abbot. His valuation in 1744, was real estate L15-0-0. Personal L8-2-0, being 1 horse, 3 cows, 1 swine, 8 sheep. He married a 2nd wife, Dorcas Frost of Dunstable, May 20, 1749. Dorcas died June 11, 1775 (age 60).

Holt-1383 and Holt-389 appear to represent the same person because: Joseph Holt of Lunenburg was first married to Mary Abbott and second married to Dorcas Boynton.

Holt-1523 and Holt-389 appear to represent the same person because: Both are Husband of same Mary Abbot b 1713. There is a whole line from Mary up that also needs to be merged.
