Biography

John Hooker immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Puritan Great Migration
John Hooker immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for England.

John Hooker was born about 1626[1] at either Chelmsford or Little Baddow in Essex, England; eldest son of Rev. Thomas Hooker and his wife Susannah (Unknown) Hooker.[2]No record of his birth has been found.[1]

He was in the company of his parents when they migrated to New England in 1633; residing first at Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay then moving to Hartford, Connecticut in 1636.[2]

It is possible that John carried his father's manuscripts to London for publication, since a clerical error lists the author's representative (John) as the author (Thomas). If so, he would have been in England as early as 1645, but he was certainly there by July 7, 1647 when his father made his will: "I do not forbid my son John from seeking and taking a wife in England, yet I do forbid him from marrying and tarrying there."[2]

John Hooker was still in England in 1655 as a student at Oxford when his uncle left him L200.[2]

He conformed to the Church of England at the Restoration and was ordained deacon and priest by Robert Skinner, bishop of Exford on June 5, 1660; becoming vicar at Marsworth, Buckinghamshire on February 2, 1661. From July 15, 1669 onward he was rector of Leckhampstead, Buckinghamshire.[2]Tradition says he was a "jovial, rollicking, sporting Parson.[1]

He was rector of Leckhampstead, Buckinghamshire beginning July 15, 1669.[2]

John Hooker died on March 30, 1686.[2]"He was found dead in his bed, and buried by his friends privately at midnight, and this private midnight burial seems to suggest a suicidal ending" thus writes Edward Hooker in his book, "The Descendants of Rev. Thomas Hooker, Hartford, Connecticut 1586 - 1908."[1]

Henry, in the absence of a birth record, it would be well to change the birth to simply, "England" in about 1625.

Additionally since his last parish was Leckhamstead, Buckinghamshire - but here again no actual death record - I would change that place also to simply "England" in the data.

But leave the possibilities in the biography.

Thanks.
