John was born in 1818. In correspondence which has survived to this day, it appears that there may have been some family tensions that led John to decide to emigrate. Shipping records show that he and his heavily pregnant wife Ann, arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on the ship "Chalmers", in November 1852, accompanied by their six daughters. The children's ages ranged from one year to nine years. Shortly after they arrived, a seventh daughter, Adelaide was born. The mother died during or soon after the birth, and the new-born baby died the following day. Poor John Hooker. But there was more to come. Within three months of their mother's death, the two youngest little girls also died. Times were tough. Conditions were harsh. There is little wonder that in correspondence back to England one of the older girls strongly discouraged people who may have been tempted to follow them to Australia. John Hooker, himself was facing severe financial hardship as well..... and ten years after his arrival in Australia he too had joined his family members who had died.
