Richard Brookes Hooper was born May 1758 in Lunenberg, Virginia, the son of Obediah Hooper Sr. and Masilva (Brooks) Hooper. He was the brother of Mary (Hooper) White, William Hooper, Obediah Hooper Jr. and Nancy (Hooper) Goodlett

Richard married Elizabeth (Adams) Word on January 13, 1783 in Halifax County Virginia. They had the following children:

  2. Nancy Hooper,
  3. Obediah Hooper Sr.,
  4. Matthew B. Hooper,
  5. Susannah Hooper,
  6. Jesse C. Hooper,
  7. James A. Hooper and
