Biography

Sarah (Hooper) Wardwell was accused of witchcraft in the Salem Witch Trials

Sarah Wardwell was born 7 Dec 1650 at Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay, the daughter of William Hooper and Elizabeth Marshall.[1] [2]

She was married 1st to Adam Hawkes by June 1670 at Lynn, Massachusetts Bay, as his 2nd wife,[3][2]

She married 2nd to Samuel Wardle (Wardwell) at Andover, Massachusetts Bay, on 9 Jan 1672/3.[4][3][2]

She died on 1 Jul 1711 at Andover, Essex, Massachusetts Bay.[5][2]

Witch Trials

On 1 Sep 1692, she was examined and confessed before Major Bartholomew Gedney, Colonel John Hathorne, Captain Jonathan Corwin, and Colonel John Higginson; "She has been in the Snare of the Divel 6 years at w'ch time #(theDivel) a man appeared to her & required her to Worship him & doe him Service he Said he was god & Should be worshiped & promised Me Such thing as I wanted."[6]

"...Sarah Bridges & Hanah Post & Mary Warren Mary Lacy Jun'r & Martha Sprague, Testified they Saw her afflict Abigal Martin in the Court & Hannah Post S'd She Saw her afflict Sarah Bridges."[6]

Sarah and her husband, Samuel Wardwell, were both accused and convicted of witchcraft. Samuel was executed; Sarah was reprieved and released.[7][4][2]

On 26 May 1703, the General Court of Massachusetts Bay issued a Reversal of Attainder, which "declared Null and Void to all Intents Construcons & purposes Whatsoever as if no such Convictions Judgments or Attainders had Ever been had or given..."[8]

In December 1711, the heirs to Samuel Wardwell and his wife, Sarah, were granted 36 Pounds 15 Shillings as compensation.[9]

Massachusetts Remediation

  1. 17 October 1710, Convictions Reversed, The General Court of Massachusetts Bay, An act, the several convictions, judgments, and attainders be, and hereby are, reversed, and declared to be null and void.[10]
  2. 17 Dec 1711, Compensation to Survivors, Governor Dudley, GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS BAY, approved compensation to such persons as are living, and to those that legally represent them that are dead [For Samuel Wardwell and wife, 36 pounds, 15 schillings][10]
  3. 28 Aug 1957, No Disgrace to Descendants, General Court of Massachusetts, ...such proceedings, were and are shocking, and the result of a wave of popular hysterical fear of the Devil in the community, and further declares that, as all the laws under which said proceedings...have been long since abandoned and superseded by our more civilized laws, no disgrace or cause for distress attaches to the said descendants or any of them by reason of said proceedings.[11]
  4. 31 Oct 2001, Additional Victims Included, Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives in General Court, AN ACT RELATIVE TO THE WITCHCRAFT TRIAL OF 1692, chapter 145 is hereby further amended by adding Bridget Bishop, Susannah Martin, Alice Parker, Margaret Scott and Wilmot Redd.[12]
