Nicholas lived at 36 Pepper Street, Bere Alston, Devon England at the time of the 1851 Census and was listed as an Agricultural Labourer. He was born in 1800 in Bere Alston, which is situated 14 miles north of Plymouth. He was married to Grace Bishop and she was born in 1809. Two of their children, Robert and John were listed as labourers at the Lead mine and Nicholas' brother Robert, born in 1804, was a labourer at the Smelting Works. The two younger children of the family, James and Grace were listed as scholars in the 1851 Census. All of the children were born in Bere Alston.
