Born in Bedford County, Tennessee on August 26, 1812, he was the fifth child and fourth son of Richard E Hooper (Captain Richard Hooper), John Jefferson married Altasarah Bounds in Tennessee in 1837. By 1840, soon after their marriage, John and Altasarah were living in Texas. On the 1840 Republic of Texas tax list, John Jefferson Hooper is assessed for 4,428 acres of land in Shelby County. John and Altasarah didn't migrate from Tennessee to Texas alone, but with them came John's brother, Benjamin Franklin Hooper, Ben's wife Laura, the sister of Altasarah, and Francis and Mary Bounds, the parents of Altasarah and Laura. John Jefferson was a farmer and surveyor. He helped in the surveyance of the area of Fort Worth and Tarrant County.
