He was the eldest son
NINETY-THIRD BIRTHDAY. RESIDENT OF MOUNT EDEN. The 93rd birthday of Mrs. M. E. Hooper, of 24, Abbott's Road, Mount Eden, falls to-morrow. Mrs. Hooper was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, in 1837, and came to Auckland with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Allen, of Allendale, Mount Albert, who arrived with their family in the Black Eagle, in November, 1861. Miss Allen, married Dr. R. R. Hooper, medical officer for natives for the district, and for 21 years they worked near the various Maori, settlements in the province.
This work was interrupted in 1886, when Dr. and Mrs. Hooper were at Galatea, the whole neighbourhood being overwhelmed by the Tarawera eruption. The experiences through which they passed before reaching safety at Rotorua shattered the health of Dr. Hooper, and he died shortly afterwards. Mrs. Hooper retired to Auckland, where she has lived ever since.
